Former Army Nurse and mom of 4 kids, Stephena Anderson couldn't find blankets that could be used with her stroller and car seat. The New England winters are what inspired her to find way to keep her baby safe and warm. Being a practical mom, she wanted to focus on making functional and versatile products that can be used for children from birth through toddlerhood.
Through her carefully designed, handmade and baby-safe products like the Cocoona, she is helping other moms save precious time, money, space, and sanity. "I started making baby gear to use for my kids and got interest from other parents, so I launched my business, Dancing Skunks, to help save them the same frustrations I was having with other products on the market."
As a former Mother Baby nurse, she had done the research to know the importance of safety and skin-to-skin contact. She designed the Skin to Skin Snuggle Romper as a one-piece designed for easy skin to skin contact. It has built-in mitts and socks in a size made to a grow with the baby. She experienced firsthand, how families with preemies and micro-babies where often under-prepared to keep their newborns warm and cozy. She used extra fabric scraps to sew preemie- and micro-preemie-sized hats to donate to NICU families. “My business makes it possible to help my customers in big and small ways every day. I am proud that I have found a way to reduce fabric waste and be able to make something useful and special for preemies."
For Anderson, it is an important value to put her talent for the good of others. "We all have talents that we can use to make a positive impact on someone else. I think it's important to use those talents to help others. Small acts can still have a big impact."
So, what's next for Dancing Skunks? Anderson plans to grow her business through local networks that will help grow other small businesses in the Pacific Northwest. And help deliver many, many more snuggles!
